New FSA Travel Insurance Regulations 2009
As a travel agent or tour operator are you ready for the new travel insurance regulations from January 2009?
Travel agents and tour operators, to date, have had a special exemption, where they could sell travel insurance alongside a travel or holiday booking.
From January 2009, travel agents, like other travel insurance sales outlets will be regulated by the Financial Services Authority (FSA).
If you are a travel agent or tour operator, our advice is that you need to act now to secure your future sales of travel insurance
rather than waiting for the January deadline to arrive.
You must discuss with your travel insurance partner how you will comply with the FSA regulations,
so you can organise and implement the correct training and procedures well before the January 2009 deadline.
There are 4 possible options open to travel agents to comply with the new FSA travel insurance regulations:
- Apply for authorisation by the FSA to sell travel insurance.
There may be significant administration and compliance costs which few travel agents are likely to like.
- To work with your travel insurance partner to achieve Appointed Representative status.
- To no longer sell travel insurance directly and become an introducer of business to travel insurance companies,
offering no advice and not taking any money.
- To give up selling travel insurance completely.
